About the event
Advanced Horsemanship Camp July 8-12, 2024 9a-2p
As one of the many perks to being an enrolled tuition student at W.A, Advanced "Horse" camp offers exclusive VIP access to a more immersive training experience. Qualifying W.A lesson students spend a week expanding on concepts we just don't have time for in the usual 60min classes. Each day students draw for the horse they will spend the day with following the IEA(Interscholastic Equestrian Association)method for horse/rider pairing. From there students get to collectively decide what the day's agenda will be focused on. Their options include:
Field work- students spend the day out in the field, challenging them to adapt and adjust to uneven torane and natural obstacles.
Showmanship- students spend a portion of their time exercising their short-term memory as we evaluate patters as well as aid our horses in ground training ques.
Intro to Mounted Roping- students learn to employ their riding skills in a practical application senerio that enrourages them to split their attention to riding their horse and aiming at a target.
Trail- students are taken out into the woods on our farm's private trail collection teaching them to exercise their skills in a real-world enviornment.
Water Play- students get to ride bareback and play in the water/sprinkler together while enjoying their horses and training.
One day will be designated for an "off-site" field trip to a neighboring facility where we practice our canter/lead work. Campers will trail ride to the new space, practice, and trail ride back to our arena before breaking for lunch.
Each day is loaded in lots of horse activities including all the chores that go with horse ownership. Digital portfolios will again be offered at $20 each. Parents are asked to provide a flash drive. Drives typically include 50-100 images of each camper's unique and individual experience at camp. Drives and $ must be submitted no later than Wed. upon drop-off so that they can be prepared to go home with campers on Friday.
To qualify for this intese week of horses, campers must:
1)be enrolled with the W.A lesson program
2)be able to walk/jog/reverse in a group setting with confidence and skill
3)be 7+ years old
All our camps include a hay ride through the farm. All campers are required to bring packed lunch, snack, and water with them to class. Advanced campers should come prepared to ride every day. Optional change-of-clothes is encouraged for post-horse activities.
